Jazz Studies Program Founder Charlie Haden Plays the LA Phil with Family and Friends

Jazz legend, founder of CalArts Jazz Studies Program and three-time Grammy winner Charlie Haden revisits his bluegrass/country roots on Tuesday, November 17 at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles. For Charlie Haden Family & Friends: Rambling Boy, Charlie performs with a band that includes the Haden triplets (Tanya, Rachel and Petra), brother Josh Haden, and a host of bluegrass musicians. Charlie’s son-in-law, actor Jack Black, is a special guest.

Charlie made a career in jazz, but in 2008 he made, Rambling Boy, an album of bluegrass songs. The LA Phil concert reunites the album’s artists for an evening of live performance.

Recently, Charlie was the feature of a new documentary Charlie Haden: Rambling Boy which had its U.S. premiere at REDCAT (Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater). For Rambling Boy, award-winning director Reto Caduff offers an absorbing chronicle of Haden's life and work--as instrumentalist, composer, bandleader, educator, political activist and family man.

In October 2009, Charlie was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from Bass Player Magazine. The Bass Player honor is the most recent accolade in Charlie’s impressive roster of awards. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship for composition (1970), is a three-time NEA recipient for composition, a three-time Grammy Award winner (1997, 2001, 2004) and has received multiple international awards including the Grand Prix Charles Cros (the French equivalent of the Grammy) as well as Japan's Gold Disc Award from the magazine Swing Journal.
