Charlie Haden Documentary at the Santa Barbara Film Festival
The Reto Caduff documentary Charlie Haden: Rambling Boy screens at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival this weekend. Haden, who established the jazz studies program at CalArts in 1982, is regarded as one of jazz's great bassists.
Rambling Boy, however, follows Charlie Haden returning to his country-bluegrass roots as he records the Rambling Boy album with family and friends.
Interspersed with music and film clips from Haden’s personal collection, the documentary tracks his bluegrass beginnings, moving from the Ozarks to the heart of the 1960s jazz movement, to his contributions to the avant-garde, small group, big band, world music, folk and gospel genres.
There will be two screenings of Rambling Boy at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival:
> Saturday, Feb. 6, 7 p.m. Lobero Theatre
> Tuesday, Feb. 9, 12:30 p.m. Victoria Hall
For more information, please visit the film festival site.
Other upcoming festivals and screenings for Rambling Boy include the Portland International Film Festival on Feb. 18, JustJAZZiT-Festival Brussels on Feb. 24; the Cleveland International Film Festival on March 20, 23, the Buenos Aires Independent Film Festival on April 6-18 and the Washington, DC Film Festival from April 15-25.
